Details
Checkpoint ALR 5 is the best value gravel bike in the lineup. It's a high-quality build that will hold up for long, rugged miles on pavement, dirt, and even the most treacherous gravel roads. A wealth of features like nimble-yet-stable progressive geometry, loads of mounts, plus a GRX drivetrain make it easy to customize for your kind of adventure.
It's right for you if...
Unlike the pure roadie who measures watts and weighs out meals, you favor epic off-road adventures that probably end with a beer and a burrito. But that doesn't mean you'll compromise on performance. You expect to get a lot for your hard-earned dollar, including quality, versatility, durability, and a ridiculous amount of fun.
The tech you get
A stout aluminum frame with a progressive geometry that's stable at speed and efficient when you're grinding up a climb, hidden cables that won't interfere with bags, rack and fender mounts and integrated frame bag mounts, a 2x11 Shimano GRX drivetrain with lower gears for grinding up hills or through rough gravel, hydraulic disc brakes for all-condition stopping power, tubeless ready rims, and wide 700x40c gravel tires for added stability and traction.
The final word
If the amount of adventure you can get per dollar spent is a priority for you, you won't do better than Checkpoint ALR 5. Quality parts, a durable alloy frame, and a wealth of features like extra tire clearance and customization options so you can confidently take on bigger, better adventures.
Why you'll love it
- All-new progressive geometry is quick and nimble yet keeps you stable and in control on fast, choppy descents

2 seasons down, forever to go I hope!
I beat this bike to death and it keeps rolling for more. From a 45mph head on collision in which the frame suffered no damage (nor the fork, RIP the stock front wheel though, but at 45MPH I'm just happy to be alive) to tackling singletrack in the hilliest part of Chicagoland, this has been a comfortable and reliable bike from the start.
do it all
im 5' 7" about 190lbs, in between sizes 52cm-54cm but opted for the 52cm for better handling, and it's still a comfortable ride. i'm returning to cycling after a 5-6 year hiatus and wasn't sure if i should go with a pure road bike or something in between. with this bike, i'm confident experimenting with gravel biking, bike packing, and road cycling. i plan on getting a dedicated road wheel set to avoid dropping on group rides. it's not the fastest bike, bit its comfortable and versatile.

Poorly designed bike
Buyers, beware the cable lines will scratch the entire frame (after two rides), and the only solution from Trek will be to use touch-up paint. I recommend that prospective buyers go with another brand. It's clear the quality and design of Trek bikes have gone down.
I cannot describe how happy I am with my ALR5
Owned since 11-17-2019. FYI- I am 65 yrs old, ~165 lbs. The fitment is perfect for me- thanks to Mystic Cycle' size recommendation. Surprised at it's efficiency -tubeless GR1 team tires contribute to an amazingly comfortable ride as well, even on unpaved surfaces. In love since first test ride- ~ 600mi before end of that Feb despite weather aspects. I simply did not want to get off. The 1300 Lumen Ion Pro/Ion Flare combo enables stress-less safety during the day and opened a whole new world at night. The Montrose seat (which I viewed as a too-narrow placeholder) turned out to be so insanely comfortable I basically forgot to search for alternatives. The shifters provide progressive stepping- quickly popping up to the large chainring, for example, can be chosen to provide, if desired, an identical (or nearly) ratio by managing the cassette's shifter- very convenient when efficient upshifting is necessary during, for example, rapid acceleration thru an intersection or topping a hill. The brakes are amazing. Still can't believe the ride quality on unpaved surfaces and the relative efficiency on the road. Absolutely the BEST bike I ever owned- and I have owned many. I have to stress, again how comfortable this bike is- which makes riding so joyful. I wish everyone, regardless of your choices, the same.

13 months in
Bought this 13 months ago to replace a 30 year old road bike and a 25 year old mountain bike. Very versatile. I did buy a second hand set of road tire equipped wheels to ride with my triathlete partner. The gravel ones were fine, but just a bit slow for 90km rides. Love this bike. Does everything. I do have a carbon aero bike, but this is so comfortable, so it's used more. Only complaint was the seat for my anatomy. But that's a personal thing for the longer rides. So far about 3000 km of trouble free riding.

Great Value and a great pure road bike as well
I use mainly as a road bike but appreciate the gravel tires for when any road adventure sometimes detours you. You can hold your own against any road bike out there with this one and for the price, it is a steal.
